Valley School
Brenda Gustin
Brenda
Gustin has been involved as a founder and trustee from the beginning of
SVS. Soon after opening, she volunteered to assist staff and found that
being involved with children who are given an environment to follow their
interests and be themselves was an incredibly wonderful experience. She
also learned that this type of schooling requires adults who are able
to facilitate rather than dominate and support instead of provide. Brenda
decided that her skills in communication, administration, aesthetics,
art and ethics were helpful and so she decided to organize life around
her passion for the success of SVS.
Although her family and photography studio were the dream she was living
at this time, the building of the school where students were allowed to
run, play, and discover themselves became her passion. Brenda’s
husband and children supported this adventure. Her previous experience
in business and real estate enabled her to be involved in building the
foundation of SVS and her negotiation skills helped to develop the school
in a permanent site.
Brenda is a student of life through her involvement in participatory organizations
and formal teachings. She runs her own business in the healing arts as
a yoga instructor, personality development teacher, and healer. Her favorite
hobbies are gardening, painting, and she has returned to the visual art
of photography. Her children have grown up in the world of SVS, with her
daughter graduating in 2003 and her son moving on at 14 to experience
and succeed in other forms of growth and education, to graduate in 2006.
Brenda and her family continue to support the ongoing success of Sacramento
Valley School.
