Is
There a Typical SVS Student?
In a word, no! Students range from 5 to 18, and each is unique. All
applicants are considered except those who would require extensive adult
supervision. At SVS each person has time and freedom to cultivate his
or
her curiosity, enthusiasm and sense of purpose. While we recognize that
many children may be brand new to practicing how to make decisions
regarding the course of their lives, we believe that when given the
opportunity and by modeling the skills needed to do so in a self-directed
community, children will respond remarkably well.
Temperaments, life experiences, interests and skill levels vary widely.
This adds welcomed diversity to the students' experiences in a school
culture where all are considered teachers, learning from one another
and
from life itself.
Who Are the
Families of SVS?
SVS parents and students come from all over the greater Sacramento area,
from a variety of family and socioeconomic situations. We have differing
occupations and educational backgrounds, but we do have one thing in
common: we are committed to providing a warm, stimulating, egalitarian
learning environment for our children. The school recognizes parents
as the most important ongoing influence in a child's life and seeks
thier active participation in the school community. We are proud and
excited to be establishing a meaningful alternative to traditional education
in this geographical area.
Who are the
staff of SVS?
The staff are responsible for meeting the student's instructional
needs, either through their own expertise or through procurement of
outside
resources. They are also involved in the ongoing administration of the
school.
Staff are chosen on the basis of their committment to the unique
educational philosophy, their ability to meet the needs of students
and their
dedication to the ongoing success of the school. Staff members are
hired (elected) for one-year periods only, allowing the school community
to
thoroughly review its staff requirements each year.
